Roasted Malt Market Size in Eastern Europe

The East European roasted malt market totaled $X in 2022, growing by 5.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a noticeable decrease. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, roasted malt production rose significantly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Eastern Europe

Roasted malt exports rose significantly to X tons in 2022, growing by 5.7% against the year before. Total exports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -19.9% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, roasted malt exports totaled $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 38%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Poland represented the major exporter of roasted malt in Eastern Europe, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 54% of total exports in 2022. The Czech Republic (X tons) took a 17% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Russia (11%), Belarus (8%) and Lithuania (6.4%). Bulgaria (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to roasted malt exports from Poland stood at +3.0%. At the same time, Bulgaria (+222.0%), Belarus (+62.7%) and Russia (+9.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bulgaria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +222.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Lithuania (-3.0%) and the Czech Republic (-3.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Belarus (+7.9 p.p.), Russia (+5 p.p.), Poland (+3.1 p.p.) and Bulgaria (+2.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Lithuania and the Czech Republic saw its share reduced by -4.6% and -12.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest roasted malt supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Russia, with an 8.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Poland amounted to +5.3%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Czech Republic (-4.0% per year) and Russia (+3.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 8.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the export price increased by 11%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Lithuania ($X per ton), while Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+2.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Eastern Europe

For the fourth consecutive year, Eastern Europe recorded decline in overseas purchases of roasted malt, which decreased by -2.8% to X tons in 2022. Total imports indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -15.5% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 30%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, roasted malt imports amounted to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Russia was the key importer of roasted malt in Eastern Europe, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was near 39% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Ukraine (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons), Poland (X tons), Estonia (X tons) and Hungary (X tons), together committing a 43% share of total imports. Romania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to roasted malt imports into Russia stood at -2.4%. At the same time, Bulgaria (+37.1%), Estonia (+21.7%), Poland (+7.5%), Ukraine (+4.4%) and Hungary (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bulgaria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +37.1% from 2012-2022. Romania experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Bulgaria (+10 p.p.), Estonia (+5.2 p.p.), Poland (+4.1 p.p.) and Ukraine (+2.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Russia (-18.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported roasted malt in Eastern Europe, comprising 33% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Poland ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Ukraine, with an 11% share.

In Russia, roasted malt imports contracted by an average annual rate of -3.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Poland (+6.8% per year) and Ukraine (+3.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 5.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the import price increased by 16% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
