In 2021, the East European rolled bitumen articles market increased by 9% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +91.5% against 2013 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 18%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, rolled bitumen articles exports surged to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +83.6% against 2016 indices. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Russia was the key exporter of articles of bitumen in rolls in Eastern Europe, with the volume of exports amounting to X square meters, which was near 76% of total exports in 2021. Belarus (X square meters) held the second position in the ranking, followed by the Czech Republic (X square meters). All these countries together held near 17% share of total exports. Poland (X square meters) took a minor share of total exports.

Exports from Russia increased at an average annual rate of +9.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Belarus (+14.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +14.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, the Czech Republic (-3.7%) and Poland (-5.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Russia (+15 p.p.) and Belarus (+5.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Poland (-7.7 p.p.) and the Czech Republic (-8.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest rolled bitumen articles supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with a 6.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia totaled +4.3%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belarus (+12.9% per year) and the Czech Republic (-6.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per square meter, picking up by 12% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 19% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per square meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per square meter), while Russia ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (-1.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Eastern Europe

For the eighth consecutive year, Eastern Europe recorded growth in purchases abroad of articles of bitumen in rolls, which increased by 7.7% to X square meters in 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 12%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, rolled bitumen articles imports soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +81.6% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of rolled bitumen articles imports in 2021 were Poland (X square meters), the Czech Republic (X square meters), Slovakia (X square meters), Hungary (X square meters), Ukraine (X square meters), Bulgaria (X square meters), Romania (X square meters) and Lithuania (X square meters), together finishing at 89% of total import.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Slovakia (with a CAGR of +12.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Poland ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and Hungary ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 47% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Romania, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Ukraine and Lithuania, which together accounted for a further 42%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Slovakia, with a CAGR of +8.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per square meter, picking up by 15% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per square meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Romania ($X per square meter) and the Czech Republic ($X per square meter), while Ukraine ($X per square meter) and Lithuania ($X per square meter) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (-0.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
