After four years of decline, the East European harvesting machinery market increased by 3% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a perceptible decline. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, harvesting machinery production dropped slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production continues to indicate a slight setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the production volume increased by 37% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, the amount of root or tuber harvesting machines exported in Eastern Europe totaled X units, remaining stable against the year before. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, harvesting machinery exports contracted to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, Poland (X units) was the key exporter of root or tuber harvesting machines, mixing up 58% of total exports. Belarus (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 23% share, followed by Hungary (6.4%). The following exporters - Ukraine (X units) and Lithuania (X units) - together made up 7.5% of total exports.

Exports from Poland increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Lithuania (+9.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lithuania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +9.1% from 2012-2021. Ukraine and Belarus experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Hungary (-1.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Poland increased by +7.5 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest harvesting machinery supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 57% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Hungary, with a 9.4% share.

In Poland, harvesting machinery exports expanded at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belarus (-3.5% per year) and Hungary (-2.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per unit, declining by -8.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a mild contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 18%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per unit), while Belarus ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lithuania (-0.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of root or tuber harvesting machines, when their volume increased by 29% to X units. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 51% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, harvesting machinery imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a deep slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 80%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Russia was the major importer of root or tuber harvesting machines in Eastern Europe, with the volume of imports accounting for X units, which was approx. 36% of total imports in 2021. Poland (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Ukraine (X units), Belarus (X units), the Czech Republic (X units) and Romania (X units). All these countries together took near 51% share of total imports. Hungary (X units) held a little share of total imports.

Imports into Russia decreased at an average annual rate of -7.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Hungary (+5.8%) and Romania (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Hungary emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +5.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Poland (-1.2%), the Czech Republic (-1.6%), Ukraine (-3.7%) and Belarus (-6.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Poland (+4.2 p.p.), Hungary (+2.2 p.p.) and Romania (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Belarus (-2.1 p.p.) and Russia (-13.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest harvesting machinery importing markets in Eastern Europe were Russia ($X), Poland ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X), with a combined 69% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Ukraine, Romania, Belarus and Hungary, which together accounted for a further 20%.

Romania, with a CAGR of +2.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per unit, growing by 14% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 19% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per unit), while Hungary ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
