In 2022, after three years of decline, there was growth in shipments abroad of sack kraft paper, when their volume increased by 1.1% to X tons. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sack kraft paper exports surged to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +35.3% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

The Czech Republic (X tons) and Russia (X tons) represented roughly 75% of total exports in 2022. Bulgaria (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Poland (X tons) and Estonia (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 24% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the Czech Republic (with a CAGR of +6.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X), Russia ($X) and Bulgaria ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 84% of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, the Czech Republic, with a CAGR of +10.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 17% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 21%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Estonia ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+5.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Eastern Europe

After two years of growth, purchases abroad of sack kraft paper decreased by -12.1% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 5.8%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, sack kraft paper imports expanded sharply to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 20%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Poland dominates imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 54% of total imports in 2022. Ukraine (X tons) held a 9.9% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Romania (9.4%), Hungary (8.3%), Russia (6%) and the Czech Republic (5.7%). Slovakia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Poland experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of sack kraft paper. At the same time, Slovakia (+33.2%) and Romania (+4.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Slovakia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +33.2% from 2012-2022. Hungary experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Russia (-1.1%), Ukraine (-5.6%) and the Czech Republic (-8.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Poland (+7.3 p.p.), Romania (+3.9 p.p.) and Slovakia (+2.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Ukraine and the Czech Republic saw its share reduced by -6.8% and -7.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Poland ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sack kraft paper in Eastern Europe, comprising 55% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ukraine ($X), with a 9.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Romania, with a 9.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Poland amounted to +3.7%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ukraine (-3.9% per year) and Romania (+7.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 26% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.3%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
