Preserved salmon exports surged to X tons in 2021, rising by 38% on 2020. In general, exports recorded a prominent expansion. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, preserved salmon exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
Poland prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 85% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Latvia (X tons), creating a 7.8% share of total exports. Estonia (X tons) and Russia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Poland was also the fastest-growing in terms of the salmon (prepared or preserved) exports, with a CAGR of +14.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Latvia (+10.8%), Estonia (+9.7%) and Russia (+3.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Poland (+16 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -2.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest preserved salmon supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Latvia ($X), with a 3.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Estonia, with a 2.4% share.
In Poland, preserved salmon exports expanded at an average annual rate of +12.8% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Latvia (-3.8% per year) and Estonia (+11.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, waning by -5.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Estonia (+2.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, the amount of salmon (prepared or preserved) imported in Eastern Europe skyrocketed to X tons, picking up by 57% against the previous year's figure. In general, imports saw a strong expansion. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, Slovakia (X tons) represented the key importer of salmon (prepared or preserved), generating 33% of total imports. Latvia (X tons) held a 17% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Ukraine (12%), Romania (10%), the Czech Republic (8.5%), Poland (5.5%) and Hungary (4.7%).
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Slovakia (with a CAGR of +46.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Slovakia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported salmon (prepared or preserved) in Eastern Europe, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Romania ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with an 11% share.
In Slovakia, preserved salmon imports increased at an average annual rate of +52.5% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Romania (+10.3% per year) and the Czech Republic (+3.6% per year).

As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
