Sesame Seed Market Size in Eastern Europe

The East European sesame seed market reduced to $X in 2022, falling by -11.4% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. In 2022, shipments abroad of sesame seed decreased by -17.2% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 79% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then fell remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, sesame seed exports dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 85%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then reduced in the following year.

Exports by Country

Poland represented the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which resulted at 53% of total exports. Russia (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Bulgaria (X tons) and Lithuania (X tons). All these countries together held near 31% share of total exports. Hungary (X tons), Latvia (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

Exports from Poland increased at an average annual rate of +17.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Russia (+40.9%), Bulgaria (+31.4%), Hungary (+20.1%) and Latvia (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +40.9% from 2012-2022. Lithuania experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the Czech Republic (-1.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Poland, Russia, Bulgaria and Hungary increased by +32, +12, +9.7 and +3 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest sesame seed supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 57% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Russia ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Bulgaria, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Poland totaled +20.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Russia (+34.1% per year) and Bulgaria (+34.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 9.4% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Lithuania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+5.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, the amount of sesame seed imported in Eastern Europe shrank notably to X tons, falling by -17% on 2021 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 15%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then fell sharply in the following year.

In value terms, sesame seed imports shrank to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +53.0% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Imports by Country

Russia (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the key importers of sesame seed in 2022, amounting to approx. 41% and 28% of total imports, respectively. Romania (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Ukraine (X tons) and Bulgaria (X tons). All these countries together took near 19% share of total imports. Hungary (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Bulgaria (with a CAGR of +7.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Russia ($X), Poland ($X) and Romania ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 76% share of total imports. Ukraine, Bulgaria, Hungary and the Czech Republic lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 17%.

Bulgaria, with a CAGR of +14.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 8.6% against the previous year. Import price indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, sesame seed import price increased by +1.8% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in the Czech Republic ($X per ton) and Romania ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) and Bulgaria ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
