Shelled Hazelnut Market Size in Eastern Europe

In 2021, the East European shelled hazelnut market increased by 6.7% to $X, rising for the fifth year in a row after two years of decline. The total consumption indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +56.1% against 2016 indices. The level of consumption peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

Shelled Hazelnut Production in Eastern Europe

In value terms, shelled hazelnut production shrank to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +22.8% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Shelled Hazelnut Exports

Exports in Eastern Europe

In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of shelled hazelnuts, when their volume decreased by -20% to X tons. Total exports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 86% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, shelled hazelnut exports dropped dramatically to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate perceptible growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 52% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, the Czech Republic (X tons) represented the key exporter of shelled hazelnuts, constituting 39% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Slovakia (X tons), Lithuania (X tons), Belarus (X tons) and Poland (X tons), together achieving a 53% share of total exports. The following exporters - Bulgaria (X tons) and Russia (X tons) - together made up 5.6% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Bulgaria (with a CAGR of +89.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) remains the largest shelled hazelnut supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 50% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Slovakia ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Lithuania, with a 16% share.

In the Czech Republic, shelled hazelnut exports expanded at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Slovakia (+1.7% per year) and Lithuania (+4.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, declining by -2.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 65%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+3.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2021, supplies from abroad of shelled hazelnuts decreased by -0.4% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. Total imports indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -3.5% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 31%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, shelled hazelnut imports rose notably to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +50.2% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 22% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Russia (X tons) represented the major importer of shelled hazelnuts, constituting 43% of total imports. Poland (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 21% share, followed by the Czech Republic (8.9%), Romania (7.9%) and Ukraine (5.1%). Lithuania (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Russia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of shelled hazelnuts. At the same time, Poland (+15.0%), Romania (+7.6%) and Lithuania (+4.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +15.0% from 2012-2021. The Czech Republic experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Slovakia (-2.4%) and Ukraine (-6.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Poland (+14 p.p.) and Romania (+3.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Ukraine and Russia saw its share reduced by -5.7% and -9.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest shelled hazelnut importing markets in Eastern Europe were Russia ($X), Poland ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X), with a combined 79% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Poland, with a CAGR of +20.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 8.1% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.9%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 25% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
