Shelled Walnut Market Size in Eastern Europe

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was decline in the East European shelled walnut market, when its value decreased by -1% to $X. The total consumption indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +43.1% against 2019 indices. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

In 2022, shipments abroad of shelled walnuts decreased by -11.9% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after four years of growth. In general, exports continue to indicate a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 32%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, shelled walnut exports stood at $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 33% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Ukraine represented the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded 49% of total exports. Moldova (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Romania (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons). All these countries together held near 46% share of total exports.

Exports from Ukraine decreased at an average annual rate of -4.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, the Czech Republic (+44.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Czech Republic emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +44.6% from 2012-2022. Romania experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Moldova (-6.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of the Czech Republic and Romania increased by +8.7 and +5.7 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Ukraine ($X), Moldova ($X) and Romania ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 84% share of total exports. The Czech Republic lagged somewhat behind, comprising a further 9.2%.

The Czech Republic, with a CAGR of +40.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, surging by 16% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Moldova ($X per ton) and Romania ($X per ton), while Ukraine ($X per ton) and the Czech Republic ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ukraine (+2.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, supplies from abroad of shelled walnuts decreased by -20.7% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, showed a notable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 117% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped notably in the following year.

In value terms, shelled walnut imports dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 99% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of shelled walnut imports in 2022 were the Czech Republic (X tons), Romania (X tons), Moldova (X tons) and Poland (X tons), together finishing at 72% of total import. It was distantly followed by Hungary (X tons), Lithuania (X tons) and Bulgaria (X tons), together generating a 17% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Moldova (with a CAGR of +41.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X), Romania ($X) and Moldova ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 59% share of total imports.

Moldova, with a CAGR of +41.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, growing by 17% against the previous year. Import price indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 58%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Poland ($X per ton) and the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Bulgaria ($X per ton) and Moldova ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
