The East European shipping market shrank slightly to $X in 2021, falling by -4% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, recorded a remarkable increase. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

In value terms, shipping production declined to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, enjoyed mild growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 76%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

In 2021, shipments abroad of ships, vessels, ferry-boats for the transport of persons decreased by -12.6% to X units, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 624% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, shipping exports dropped to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 254%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then reduced slightly in the following year.
Exports by Country
The biggest shipments were from Poland (X units), Slovakia (X units), the Czech Republic (X units) and Ukraine (X units), together reaching 88% of total export. Romania (X units), Russia (X units) and Estonia (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Slovakia (with a CAGR of +57.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Poland ($X), Romania ($X) and Estonia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 95% share of total exports.
Romania, with a CAGR of +118.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per unit in 2021, picking up by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price enjoyed a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 644% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Romania ($X per unit), while Ukraine ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Estonia (+105.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of ships, vessels, ferry-boats for the transport of persons decreased by -62.1% to X units, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, imports recorded a sharp reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 426% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, shipping imports contracted significantly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 328% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Romania (X units) and Slovakia (X units) were the major importers of ships, vessels, ferry-boats for the transport of persons in Eastern Europe, together accounting for near 55% of total imports. Russia (X units) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by the Czech Republic (9.1%), Hungary (9.1%) and Poland (6.1%). The following importers - Bulgaria (X units) and Belarus (X units) - each reached a 6.1% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Romania (with a CAGR of +29.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Poland ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported ships, vessels, ferry-boats for the transport of persons in Eastern Europe, comprising 26% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Romania ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Hungary, with a 5.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Poland amounted to -5.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Romania (+66.4% per year) and Hungary (+58.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per unit in 2021, waning by -9.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, enjoyed significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 1,607% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per unit), while Belarus ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bulgaria (+39.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
