Exports in Eastern Europe

In 2021, exports of skim milk in Eastern Europe reduced dramatically to X tons, with a decrease of -16.2% compared with 2020. In general, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 33% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, skim milk exports reduced to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 74% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Poland (X tons), Latvia (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons) represented roughly 63% of total exports in 2021. The Czech Republic (X tons) took a 10% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Hungary (8.4%), Romania (6.2%) and Belarus (5.7%).

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Romania (with a CAGR of +91.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Poland ($X), Latvia ($X) and Slovakia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 68% share of total exports. The Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania and Belarus lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 27%.

Romania, with a CAGR of +82.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 3.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 35%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2021, overseas purchases of skim milk increased by 15% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Total imports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -26.1% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 67% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, skim milk imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports enjoyed a notable expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 79% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Poland represented the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which recorded 46% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Lithuania (X tons), Russia (X tons), Romania (X tons), Moldova (X tons), Latvia (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons), together constituting a 48% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to skim milk imports into Poland stood at +17.2%. At the same time, Moldova (+26.1%), Lithuania (+12.0%), Romania (+10.2%), Russia (+9.6%) and Latvia (+7.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Moldova emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +26.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, the Czech Republic (-1.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Poland (+31 p.p.), Moldova (+6.3 p.p.), Lithuania (+5.6 p.p.), Romania (+3.8 p.p.), Russia (+3.7 p.p.) and Latvia (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of the Czech Republic (-3.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Poland ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported skim milk in Eastern Europe, comprising 56% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Lithuania ($X), with a 7.4% share of total imports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with a 6.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Poland totaled +19.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Lithuania (+13.1% per year) and the Czech Republic (+2.7% per year).

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
