In 2021, the East European slaked lime market was finally on the rise to reach $X after three years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a noticeable setback. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Slaked lime exports was estimated at X tons in 2021, remaining constant against the year before. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, slaked lime exports expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

The Czech Republic was the largest exporter of slaked lime in Eastern Europe, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was near 40% of total exports in 2021. Slovakia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 22% share, followed by Poland (14%), Russia (14%) and Belarus (5.6%). Romania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Russia (with a CAGR of +15.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest slaked lime supplying countries in Eastern Europe were the Czech Republic ($X), Poland ($X) and Slovakia ($X), with a combined 77% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Russia, Belarus and Romania, which together accounted for a further 22%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Russia, with a CAGR of +8.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 7.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+4.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2021, slaked lime imports in Eastern Europe soared to X tons, picking up by 18% on 2020 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 20%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, slaked lime imports expanded markedly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +66.0% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 25% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Poland was the main importer of slaked lime in Eastern Europe, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 44% of total imports in 2021. Ukraine (X tons) held an 18% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by the Czech Republic (7.5%), Russia (6.7%), Lithuania (6.7%) and Belarus (5.2%). Slovakia (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into Poland increased at an average annual rate of +15.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Belarus (+22.6%), the Czech Republic (+9.0%) and Lithuania (+7.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +22.6% from 2012-2021. Ukraine experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Russia (-6.5%) and Slovakia (-16.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Poland (+28 p.p.), Belarus (+4.1 p.p.), the Czech Republic (+2.9 p.p.) and Lithuania (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Ukraine, Russia and Slovakia saw its share reduced by -3.9%, -9.5% and -17.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Poland ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported slaked lime in Eastern Europe, comprising 37% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ukraine ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Russia, with a 7.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Poland amounted to +15.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ukraine (-0.0% per year) and Russia (-5.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -8.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 15% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per ton), while Lithuania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
