For the tenth year in a row, the East European slate market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 145% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption continues to indicate significant growth. As a result, consumption reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, slate production contracted sharply to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production enjoyed a significant increase. In 2021, shipments abroad of slate decreased by -24.3% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports saw a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 66% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, slate exports dropped to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Poland (X tons) was the main exporter of slate, making up 52% of total exports. The Czech Republic (X tons) held a 27% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Bulgaria (15%) and Russia (4.8%).
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by the Czech Republic (with a CAGR of +10.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.
In value terms, the largest slate supplying countries in Eastern Europe were Poland ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and Russia ($X), together accounting for 85% of total exports.
In terms of the main exporting countries, the Czech Republic, with a CAGR of +9.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 15% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 63% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+14.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Slate Imports
Imports in Eastern Europe
In 2021, overseas purchases of slate increased by 19% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, recorded a abrupt shrinkage. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, slate imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
The Czech Republic was the key importer of slate in Eastern Europe, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was near 41% of total imports in 2021. Russia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 13% share, followed by Belarus (12%), Poland (9.7%), Ukraine (9.3%), Lithuania (5.7%) and Moldova (5.2%).
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to slate imports into the Czech Republic stood at -14.7%. At the same time, Lithuania (+27.7%), Poland (+9.8%) and Russia (+8.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lithuania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +27.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Moldova (-1.6%), Ukraine (-6.4%) and Belarus (-8.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Russia, Poland, Lithuania, Moldova and Ukraine increased by +11, +7.9, +5.5, +2.7 and +2.2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest slate importing markets in Eastern Europe were Poland ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and Russia ($X), together accounting for 64% of total imports.
Poland, with a CAGR of +22.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 27% against the previous year. Import price indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +9.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, slate import price increased by +50.4% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
