Snail Market Size in Eastern Europe

For the third year in a row, the East European snail market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 14% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption recorded a buoyant expansion. The level of consumption peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Snail Production in Eastern Europe

In value terms, snail production declined to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a modest increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the production volume increased by 28% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, shipments abroad of snails (except sea snails) decreased by -40.2% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, exports continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 11% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, snail exports fell notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 39%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted significantly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Hungary dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 67% of total exports in 2022. Lithuania (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 9% share, followed by Poland (5.6%) and Bulgaria (4.8%). Romania (X tons), Ukraine (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Hungary decreased at an average annual rate of -5.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Ukraine (+70.0%), Lithuania (+16.8%) and Romania (+4.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ukraine emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +70.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Bulgaria (-8.3%), Poland (-20.9%) and the Czech Republic (-26.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Hungary, Lithuania, Ukraine and Romania increased by +20, +8.3, +4 and +3 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest snail supplying countries in Eastern Europe were Lithuania ($X), Hungary ($X) and Romania ($X), together accounting for 65% of total exports. The Czech Republic, Ukraine, Bulgaria and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Ukraine, with a CAGR of +97.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 27% against the previous year. Overall, the export price posted a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 61% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+29.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Snail Imports

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, imports of snails (except sea snails) in Eastern Europe plummeted to X tons, dropping by -33% compared with 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 61%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, snail imports dropped dramatically to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +8.5% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 35%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the Czech Republic (X tons), distantly followed by Lithuania (X tons), Romania (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons) were the key importers of snails (except sea snails), together achieving 96% of total imports. Poland (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Slovakia (with a CAGR of +62.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Romania ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and Lithuania ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 89% of total imports. Slovakia and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 9.6%.

Among the main importing countries, Slovakia, with a CAGR of +58.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 26% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
