Soft Drink Market Size in Eastern Europe

In 2021, the East European soft drink market decreased by -19.5% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, consumption showed a pronounced downturn. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, soft drink production fell to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production saw a perceptible downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 8.8%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Eastern Europe

In 2021, exports of soft drinks in Eastern Europe soared to X litres, surging by 27% on 2020. Over the period under review, exports showed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 72% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, soft drink exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports posted buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 32%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Poland was the key exporting country with an export of about X litres, which finished at 38% of total exports. The Czech Republic (X litres) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 15% share, followed by Hungary (11%), Russia (10%), Romania (6.6%), Slovakia (5.7%) and Ukraine (4.8%).

Poland was also the fastest-growing in terms of the soft drinks exports, with a CAGR of +21.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Russia (+20.3%), Romania (+16.0%), Hungary (+13.8%), Ukraine (+10.8%), the Czech Republic (+10.7%) and Slovakia (+9.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Poland (+14 p.p.) and Russia (+3.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Ukraine, Slovakia and the Czech Republic saw its share reduced by -1.9%, -3.5% and -6.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest soft drink supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 35% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Russia ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Hungary, with a 12% share.

In Poland, soft drink exports expanded at an average annual rate of +14.9% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Russia (+16.7% per year) and Hungary (+8.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per litre, approximately reflecting the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 5.8%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per litre in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per litre), while Romania ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (-2.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Eastern Europe

For the tenth consecutive year, Eastern Europe recorded growth in overseas purchases of soft drinks, which increased by 22% to X litres in 2021. Overall, imports saw buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 39% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, soft drink imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Hungary (X litres), Slovakia (X litres), the Czech Republic (X litres), Poland (X litres), Romania (X litres), Bulgaria (X litres), Russia (X litres) and Lithuania (X litres) was the largest importer of soft drinks in Eastern Europe, comprising 88% of total import.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Hungary (with a CAGR of +21.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Poland ($X), Russia ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 43% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Romania, Slovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria and Lithuania, which together accounted for a further 45%.

Among the main importing countries, Romania, with a CAGR of +12.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per litre, declining by -2.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a pronounced decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 6.7% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per litre in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per litre), while Hungary ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (-0.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
