The East European soups market shrank slightly to $X in 2021, with a decrease of -2.3% against the previous year. In general, consumption showed a pronounced contraction. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Soups exports expanded modestly to X tons in 2021, growing by 4.9% compared with 2020 figures. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 10% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, soups exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Poland (X tons) was the main exporter of soups and broths, making up 40% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Slovakia (X tons), Hungary (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Romania (X tons) and Russia (X tons), together committing a 51% share of total exports. Ukraine (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Poland decreased at an average annual rate of -1.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Romania (+17.7%), Slovakia (+7.6%), Hungary (+4.3%), the Czech Republic (+3.8%) and Ukraine (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +17.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Russia (-2.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Slovakia (+7.2 p.p.), Romania (+5 p.p.) and Hungary (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Russia and Poland saw its share reduced by -3% and -15.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest soups supplying countries in Eastern Europe were Poland ($X), Slovakia ($X) and Hungary ($X), with a combined 68% share of total exports. These countries were followed by the Czech Republic, Romania, Russia and Ukraine, which together accounted for a further 26%.

Among the main exporting countries, Romania, with a CAGR of +16.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 13% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+1.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2021, purchases abroad of soups and broths increased by 0.9% to X tons, rising for the sixth consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 14% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, soups imports totaled $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Russia (X tons), Poland (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) represented the main importer of soups and broths in Eastern Europe, comprising 56% of total import. Hungary (X tons) took an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Slovakia (8.5%), Romania (7.3%) and Lithuania (4.8%).

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Romania (with a CAGR of +8.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X), Poland ($X) and Hungary ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 53% of total imports. These countries were followed by Russia, Slovakia, Romania and Lithuania, which together accounted for a further 34%.

Romania, with a CAGR of +7.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Lithuania ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
