The East European sparkling wine market expanded notably to $X in 2022, surging by 8% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, showed a abrupt descent. In 2022, after six years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of sparkling wine, when their volume decreased by -15.7% to X litres. Total exports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +81.3% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 32%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X litres, and then shrank sharply in the following year.

In value terms, sparkling wine exports declined slightly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 40%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Latvia (X litres) and Lithuania (X litres) represented roughly 66% of total exports in 2022. Poland (X litres) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 7.2% share, followed by Hungary (7%) and Moldova (6.8%). The following exporters - Belarus (X litres) and Russia (X litres) - together made up 6.7% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Latvia (with a CAGR of +22.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Latvia ($X), Lithuania ($X) and Poland ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 81% of total exports.

Latvia, with a CAGR of +15.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per litre in 2022, increasing by 15% against the previous year. Export price indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, sparkling wine export price increased by +74.6% against 2015 indices. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Latvia ($X per litre), while Hungary ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+8.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the amount of sparkling wine imported in Eastern Europe declined to X litres, waning by -7.5% against the year before. Total imports indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +15.3% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 25%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X litres, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, sparkling wine imports reduced to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 31%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Imports by Country

Russia was the key importing country with an import of around X litres, which reached 35% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Latvia (X litres), Lithuania (X litres), Poland (X litres), the Czech Republic (X litres), Romania (X litres) and Ukraine (X litres), together creating a 55% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to sparkling wine imports into Russia stood at -1.1%. At the same time, Latvia (+22.3%), Romania (+17.9%), Poland (+17.7%), Lithuania (+8.3%), the Czech Republic (+6.6%) and Ukraine (+4.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Latvia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +22.3% from 2012-2022. While the share of Latvia (+11 p.p.), Poland (+7.3 p.p.), Romania (+3.9 p.p.) and Lithuania (+3.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Russia (-26.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sparkling wine in Eastern Europe, comprising 37% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Lithuania ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Latvia, with an 11% share.

In Russia, sparkling wine imports increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Lithuania (+10.3% per year) and Latvia (+18.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per litre, waning by -3.1% against the previous year. Import price indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, sparkling wine import price increased by +53.3% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 36%. The level of import peaked at $X per litre in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Romania ($X per litre) and Russia ($X per litre), while Latvia ($X per litre) and the Czech Republic ($X per litre) were amongst the lowest.
