The East European spectacles and goggles market reduced sharply to $X in 2021, which is down by -16.7% against the previous year. In general, consumption showed a deep reduction. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of spectacles and goggles increased by 28% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a slight slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 81% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, spectacles and goggles exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Hungary was the major exporter of spectacles and goggles in Eastern Europe, with the volume of exports resulting at X units, which was approx. 35% of total exports in 2021. Poland (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 19% share, followed by the Czech Republic (17%), Estonia (11%), Russia (8.8%) and Slovakia (5.3%).

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Estonia (with a CAGR of +24.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Hungary ($X), Poland ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 82% share of total exports. Estonia, Slovakia and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 12%.

Estonia, with a CAGR of +42.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 118%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per unit), while Russia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+23.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2021, purchases abroad of spectacles and goggles increased by 2.6% to X units, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 61% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, spectacles and goggles imports declined to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a pronounced descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 44%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Russia was the largest importing country with an import of around X units, which finished at 51% of total imports. Belarus (X units) took a 21% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Poland (8.1%) and Slovakia (5.6%). The Czech Republic (X units), Moldova (X units) and Romania (X units) held a relatively small share of total imports.

Russia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of spectacles and goggles. At the same time, Belarus (+42.4%) and Moldova (+34.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +42.4% from 2012-2021. Romania experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Poland (-8.7%), the Czech Republic (-8.8%) and Slovakia (-25.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Russia (+24 p.p.), Belarus (+21 p.p.) and Moldova (+2.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Poland (-2.3 p.p.) and Slovakia (-40.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest spectacles and goggles importing markets in Eastern Europe were Poland ($X), Russia ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X), with a combined 66% share of total imports. Romania, Slovakia, Belarus and Moldova lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 16%.

Among the main importing countries, Moldova, with a CAGR of +32.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per unit in 2021, which is down by -14.7% against the previous year. Import price indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, spectacles and goggles import price decreased by -23.3% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the import price increased by 53% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Romania ($X per unit), while Belarus ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
