The East European grape wine spirits market declined to $X in 2022, which is down by -6.9% against the previous year. Overall, consumption saw a pronounced descent. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, grape wine spirits production dropped to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 18%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, the amount of spirits obtained from distilled grape wine or grape marc exported in Eastern Europe fell to X litres, with a decrease of -7.4% against the year before. In general, exports saw a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 32% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X litres. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, grape wine spirits exports declined rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a noticeable shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 36%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Moldova was the key exporting country with an export of about X litres, which reached 48% of total exports. Latvia (X litres) held an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Lithuania (11%), Ukraine (7.9%), the Czech Republic (6.9%) and Russia (6.9%). Slovakia (X litres) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Moldova decreased at an average annual rate of -2.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Russia (+53.8%), Slovakia (+36.7%) and Lithuania (+5.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +53.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Latvia (-2.6%), the Czech Republic (-8.9%) and Ukraine (-11.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Russia, Lithuania, Moldova and Slovakia increased by +6.8, +6.4, +4.4 and +2.3 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Latvia ($X), Lithuania ($X) and Moldova ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 75% of total exports. These countries were followed by the Czech Republic, Ukraine, Russia and Slovakia, which together accounted for a further 15%.

Russia, with a CAGR of +39.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per litre in 2022, shrinking by -27.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 24%. The level of export peaked at $X per litre in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Latvia ($X per litre), while Russia ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+3.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, approx. X litres of spirits obtained from distilled grape wine or grape marc were imported in Eastern Europe; with a decrease of -10.1% against 2021 figures. Total imports indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +65.3% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X litres in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, grape wine spirits imports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a mild decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 32%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Russia represented the main importer of spirits obtained from distilled grape wine or grape marc in Eastern Europe, with the volume of imports reaching X litres, which was near 67% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Ukraine (X litres) and Belarus (X litres), together mixing up a 22% share of total imports. The following importers - Lithuania (X litres) and Latvia (X litres) - together made up 5.6% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to grape wine spirits imports into Russia stood at +2.9%. At the same time, Belarus (+11.1%) and Latvia (+3.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +11.1% from 2012-2022. Ukraine experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Lithuania (-1.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Russia (+7.7 p.p.) and Belarus (+3.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Ukraine saw its share reduced by -4.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported spirits obtained from distilled grape wine or grape marc in Eastern Europe, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ukraine ($X), with an 8.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Lithuania, with a 7.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia amounted to -2.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ukraine (-5.7% per year) and Lithuania (+2.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per litre in 2022, with a decrease of -3.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a perceptible decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 4.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per litre in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Latvia ($X per litre), while Ukraine ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lithuania (+4.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
