Strawberry Market Size in Eastern Europe
The East European strawberry market dropped to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -4.6% against the previous year. In general, consumption showed a slight contraction. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Strawberry Production in Eastern Europe
In value terms, strawberry production contracted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Russia (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Belarus (X tons), together accounting for 81% of total production. Ukraine, Romania and Moldova lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 16%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Moldova (with a CAGR of +36.4%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
The average strawberry yield contracted modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, remaining stable against the year before. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 11%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the harvested area of strawberries in Eastern Europe declined slightly to X ha, waning by -1.6% against the year before. In general, the harvested area saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the harvested area increased by 9.1%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Eastern Europe
In 2022, shipments abroad of strawberries increased by 14% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, exports posted strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 87%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, strawberry exports rose rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a mild decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Belarus (X tons) was the largest exporter of strawberries, creating 53% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Poland (X tons), comprising a 35% share of total exports. The following exporters - Moldova (X tons) and Romania (X tons) - together made up 4.9% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Belarus (with a CAGR of +55.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest strawberry supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 52% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with a 26% share of total exports. It was followed by Moldova, with a 2.6% share.
In Poland, strawberry exports expanded at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belarus (+39.5% per year) and Moldova (+19.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -5.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 91%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+2.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Strawberry Imports
Imports in Eastern Europe
In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of strawberries, when their volume decreased by -6.7% to X tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 34%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
In value terms, strawberry imports reduced slightly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 31%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.
Imports by Country
Russia represented the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which recorded 39% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Poland (X tons), Romania (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Belarus (X tons), together creating a 45% share of total imports. The following importers - Bulgaria (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) - each accounted for a 6.3% share of total imports.
Russia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of strawberries. At the same time, Belarus (+29.9%), Romania (+16.2%), Poland (+7.3%), Hungary (+6.4%), Bulgaria (+4.1%) and the Czech Republic (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +29.9% from 2012-2022. Romania (+7.9 p.p.), Poland (+6 p.p.) and Belarus (+4.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -14.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest strawberry importing markets in Eastern Europe were Russia ($X), Poland ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X), together comprising 66% of total imports. Romania, Belarus, Hungary and Bulgaria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.

Import Prices by Country
The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 6.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a slight decline.
