Sugar Beet Market Size in Eastern Europe

The East European sugar beet market declined to $X in 2022, reducing by -6% against the previous year. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a pronounced descent. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sugar beet production expanded markedly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 52%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Russia (X tons) remains the largest sugar beet producing country in Eastern Europe, comprising approx. 50% of total volume. Moreover, sugar beet production in Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Poland (X tons), twofold. Ukraine (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Russia totaled -1.8%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Poland (+2.0% per year) and Ukraine (-5.9% per year).

In 2022, the average yield of sugar beet in Eastern Europe fell to X tons per ha, with a decrease of -3.5% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the yield increased by 21% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the sugar beet yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of sugar beet were harvested in Eastern Europe; falling by -2.8% on the previous year. In general, the harvested area saw a perceptible setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 9.7% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Eastern Europe

Sugar beet exports shrank to X tons in 2022, which is down by -9.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a pronounced expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 116%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sugar beet exports rose notably to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 97% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Slovakia (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) dominates exports structure, together committing 83% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Lithuania (X tons) and Latvia (X tons), together committing a 15% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Lithuania (with a CAGR of +63.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Slovakia ($X) remains the largest sugar beet supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 44% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Hungary ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Latvia, with a 12% share.

In Slovakia, sugar beet exports expanded at an average annual rate of +15.4% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hungary (-10.9% per year) and Latvia (+15.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, growing by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 40%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Latvia ($X per ton), while Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, purchases abroad of sugar beet increased by 21% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +97.2% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 62%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, sugar beet imports surged to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +97.6% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 61%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the Czech Republic (X tons) was the key importer of sugar beet, generating 73% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Hungary (X tons) and Lithuania (X tons), together committing a 25% share of total imports.

Imports into the Czech Republic increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Hungary (+63.3%) and Lithuania (+62.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Hungary emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +63.3% from 2012-2022. Hungary (+13 p.p.) and Lithuania (+12 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the Czech Republic saw its share reduced by -23.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sugar beet in Eastern Europe, comprising 68% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Hungary ($X), with a 17% share of total imports.

In the Czech Republic, sugar beet imports expanded at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Hungary (+42.2% per year) and Lithuania (+42.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 32% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
