Sugar Market Size in Eastern Europe

The East European sugar market expanded to $X in 2021, with an increase of 4.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a deep downturn. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Sugar Production in Eastern Europe

In value terms, sugar production contracted slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production showed a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 9.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Russia (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of sugar production, accounting for 55% of total volume. Moreover, sugar production in Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Poland (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Ukraine (X tons), with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume in Russia amounted to +4.0%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Poland (+2.9% per year) and Ukraine (-4.1% per year).

Sugar Exports

Exports in Eastern Europe

In 2021, sugar exports in Eastern Europe contracted notably to X tons, waning by -31.9% compared with 2020 figures. Overall, exports showed a pronounced setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 40%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sugar exports dropped to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Poland (X tons) and Russia (X tons) were the major exporters of sugar in Eastern Europe, together mixing up 57% of total exports. The Czech Republic (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 15% share, followed by Belarus (10%), Lithuania (5.3%) and Slovakia (4.6%). Ukraine (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Russia (with a CAGR of +23.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest sugar supplying countries in Eastern Europe were Poland ($X), Russia ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X), with a combined 71% share of total exports.

Russia, with a CAGR of +20.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, surging by 30% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a pronounced decrease. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Lithuania ($X per ton) and the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Ukraine ($X per ton) and Poland ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (-1.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Sugar Imports

Imports in Eastern Europe

Sugar imports expanded significantly to X tons in 2021, picking up by 9.1% against the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, saw a abrupt decline. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sugar imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep downturn. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Romania (X tons) and Ukraine (X tons) represented the key importers of sugar in Eastern Europe, together amounting to near 44% of total imports. Hungary (X tons) took an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Bulgaria (11%), Poland (9.5%), Russia (8.7%) and the Czech Republic (5.3%).

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Ukraine (with a CAGR of +6.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

In value terms, the largest sugar importing markets in Eastern Europe were Ukraine ($X), Romania ($X) and Hungary ($X), with a combined 58% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Ukraine, with a CAGR of +9.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 9.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Ukraine ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
