The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +47.7% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, sulphides of non-metals imports contracted to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 26%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

Bulgaria (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) represented roughly 68% of total imports in 2021. Russia (X tons) held a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Poland (13%). The following importers - Slovakia (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) - together made up 4.6% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +65.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Russia ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and Bulgaria ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 67% of total imports. These countries were followed by Slovakia, Poland and Belarus, which together accounted for a further 26%.

Among the main importing countries, Poland, with a CAGR of +27.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -9.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 17% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per ton), while Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+0.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
