The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 27%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, sunflower oilcake exports soared to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +82.9% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 19%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Ukraine represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for 57% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Russia (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons) and Hungary (X tons), together constituting a 37% share of total exports. Romania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Ukraine experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of sunflower oilcake. At the same time, Bulgaria (+17.8%), Hungary (+5.9%) and Romania (+4.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bulgaria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +17.8% from 2012-2021. Russia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Bulgaria (+6.1 p.p.) and Hungary (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Russia and Ukraine saw its share reduced by -4.6% and -5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Ukraine ($X) remains the largest sunflower oilcake supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 58% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Russia ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by Bulgaria, with an 8.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Ukraine totaled +5.7%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Russia (+2.6% per year) and Bulgaria (+21.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, surging by 37% against the previous year. Export price indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, sunflower oilcake export price increased by +66.5% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Hungary ($X per ton) and Bulgaria ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) and Romania ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

Imports in Eastern Europe

Sunflower oilcake imports fell to X tons in 2021, which is down by -14.4% against the year before. In general, imports continue to indicate a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 28% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sunflower oilcake imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a perceptible shrinkage. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Belarus (X tons) represented the key importer of sunflower oilcake, making up 47% of total imports. Poland (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Latvia (X tons). All these countries together took near 37% share of total imports. The following importers - Lithuania (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons) - together made up 10% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Latvia (with a CAGR of +13.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Belarus ($X), Poland ($X) and Latvia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 84% of total imports.

Latvia, with a CAGR of +13.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 41% against the previous year. Import price indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, sunflower oilcake import price increased by +40.9% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 45% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.
