After five years of growth, the East European surgical glove market decreased by -25.7% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded strong growth. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

After three years of growth, shipments abroad of surgical gloves decreased by -10.3% to X tons in 2022. Total exports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +43.3% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, surgical glove exports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 84% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Hungary (X tons) was the main exporter of surgical gloves, committing 55% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Poland (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons), together committing a 38% share of total exports. Russia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to surgical glove exports from Hungary stood at -1.3%. At the same time, Slovakia (+32.6%), the Czech Republic (+13.0%) and Poland (+12.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Slovakia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +32.6% from 2012-2022. Russia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Poland (+11 p.p.), Slovakia (+8.9 p.p.) and the Czech Republic (+6.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Hungary (-27.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest surgical glove supplying countries in Eastern Europe were Hungary ($X), Poland ($X) and Slovakia ($X), together accounting for 82% of total exports.

Slovakia, with a CAGR of +51.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -4.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a measured expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the export price increased by 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per ton), while Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Slovakia (+14.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, purchases abroad of surgical gloves decreased by -25.8% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, showed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 35%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

In value terms, surgical glove imports fell sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 96% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Poland (X tons), distantly followed by Slovakia (X tons), Hungary (X tons), Russia (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Ukraine (X tons) and Romania (X tons) represented the main importers of surgical gloves, together constituting 94% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Slovakia (with a CAGR of +25.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Poland ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported surgical gloves in Eastern Europe, comprising 32% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Slovakia ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Poland amounted to +21.6%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Slovakia (+33.1% per year) and the Czech Republic (+12.9% per year).

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -5.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate noticeable growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 50%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+9.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
