Sweet Potato Market Size in Eastern Europe

For the third consecutive year, the East European sweet potato market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 38% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a significant expansion. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Sweet Potato Production in Eastern Europe

In value terms, sweet potato production surged to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +80.8% against 2016 indices. As a result, production attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Poland (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons).

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the key producing countries, was attained by Slovakia (with a CAGR of +0.1%).

Sweet Potato Exports

Exports in Eastern Europe

In 2021, shipments abroad of sweet potatoes decreased by -12.8% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after eight years of growth. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 378%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sweet potato exports stood at $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 183%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Hungary (X tons), distantly followed by the Czech Republic (X tons), Poland (X tons), Latvia (X tons) and Lithuania (X tons) were the key exporters of sweet potatoes, together mixing up 97% of total exports. Bulgaria (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Latvia (with a CAGR of +80.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Hungary ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and Poland ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 77% of total exports. Latvia, Lithuania and Bulgaria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.

Bulgaria, with a CAGR of +79.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 22% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 108% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bulgaria ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bulgaria (+30.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Sweet Potato Imports

Imports in Eastern Europe

For the eighth consecutive year, Eastern Europe recorded growth in purchases abroad of sweet potatoes, which increased by 20% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports showed a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 66% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, sweet potato imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 75%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Poland represented the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which recorded 31% of total imports. Hungary (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Russia (X tons), Romania (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons). All these countries together held near 56% share of total imports. Lithuania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Hungary (with a CAGR of +67.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Poland ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sweet potatoes in Eastern Europe, comprising 35% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Hungary ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with a 10% share.

In Poland, sweet potato imports increased at an average annual rate of +32.9% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Hungary (+66.9% per year) and the Czech Republic (+42.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 5% against the previous year. Import price indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +12.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, sweet potato import price decreased by -2.5% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 103%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
