After ten years of growth, overseas shipments of sugary soft drinks decreased by -1.1% to X litres in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 33% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X litres, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, sugary soft drink exports declined slightly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 39% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, leveling off in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Poland (X litres) was the major exporter of sugary soft drinks, constituting 37% of total exports. Hungary (X litres) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 13% share, followed by the Czech Republic (13%), Russia (12%), Romania (9.3%) and Slovakia (6%). Ukraine (X litres) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to sugary soft drink exports from Poland stood at +20.2%. At the same time, Russia (+23.4%), Romania (+17.3%), Ukraine (+14.8%), Hungary (+12.6%), Slovakia (+3.5%) and the Czech Republic (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +23.4% from 2012-2022. While the share of Poland (+18 p.p.), Russia (+7.4 p.p.) and Romania (+3.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Slovakia (-7.5 p.p.) and the Czech Republic (-19.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest sugary soft drink supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 36% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Hungary ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Russia, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Poland totaled +18.7%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hungary (+14.7% per year) and Russia (+19.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per litre in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 8.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per litre), while Ukraine ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

Sugary soft drink imports rose significantly to X litres in 2022, increasing by 7.2% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, imports enjoyed a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, sugary soft drink imports reached $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 27%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Hungary (X litres), Slovakia (X litres), Poland (X litres), the Czech Republic (X litres), Russia (X litres), Romania (X litres), Ukraine (X litres) and Bulgaria (X litres) was the major importer of sugary soft drinks in Eastern Europe, creating 86% of total import.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Ukraine (with a CAGR of +26.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Poland ($X), Romania ($X) and Slovakia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 42% of total imports. Russia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Bulgaria and Ukraine lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 45%.

Ukraine, with a CAGR of +17.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per litre in 2022, growing by 2.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 8.5%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per litre in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per litre), while Hungary ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
