The East European tapioca and substitutes market stood at $X in 2021, rising by 3.9% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, showed buoyant growth. Exports in Eastern Europe

In 2021, shipments abroad of tapioca and substitutes was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports saw a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 103%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, tapioca and substitutes exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 214% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Belarus (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and Moldova (X tons) represented roughly 75% of total exports in 2021. The Czech Republic (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Poland (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 20% share of total exports. Slovakia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Hungary (with a CAGR of +95.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest tapioca and substitutes supplying countries in Eastern Europe were Moldova ($X), Hungary ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X), with a combined 60% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Slovakia, Belarus and Poland, which together accounted for a further 33%.

Among the main exporting countries, Slovakia, with a CAGR of +79.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price posted a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 210% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Moldova (+10.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2021, purchases abroad of tapioca and substitutes decreased by -2.4% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 50% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, tapioca and substitutes imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 50% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Poland represented the key importer of tapioca and substitutes in Eastern Europe, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was near 58% of total imports in 2021. Hungary (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Russia (X tons), Romania (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 38% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to tapioca and substitutes imports into Poland stood at +5.9%. At the same time, Romania (+21.6%), the Czech Republic (+17.9%), Russia (+17.1%) and Hungary (+6.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +21.6% from 2012-2021. Romania (+3.7 p.p.), Russia (+3.4 p.p.) and the Czech Republic (+2.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Hungary and Poland saw its share reduced by -2.5% and -7.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Poland ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported tapioca and substitutes in Eastern Europe, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Hungary ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with a 7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Poland stood at +9.7%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Hungary (+4.9% per year) and the Czech Republic (+20.6% per year).

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 19% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.1%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
