In 2022, the amount of tarred, bituminised or asphalted paper and paperboard exported in Eastern Europe amounted to X tons, flattening at the year before. Overall, exports, however, showed a mild shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 6.6% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, asphalted paper exports amounted to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a perceptible downturn. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
The Czech Republic prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 88% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Russia (X tons), comprising a 7.2% share of total exports. Belarus (X tons) and Estonia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
The Czech Republic experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of tarred, bituminised or asphalted paper and paperboard. At the same time, Estonia (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Estonia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +2.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Russia (-3.3%) and Belarus (-11.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of the Czech Republic increased by +10 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) remains the largest asphalted paper supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Russia ($X), with an 8.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Estonia, with a 4.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in the Czech Republic was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Russia (-2.8% per year) and Estonia (-0.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, rising by 10% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 18% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Estonia ($X per ton), while the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (+4.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

For the fourth consecutive year, Eastern Europe recorded decline in overseas purchases of tarred, bituminised or asphalted paper and paperboard, which decreased by -24.5% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports faced a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 7.6% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, asphalted paper imports shrank dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 51%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Poland (X tons), distantly followed by the Czech Republic (X tons), Estonia (X tons), Hungary (X tons), Romania (X tons), Belarus (X tons), Slovakia (X tons) and Latvia (X tons) represented the major importers of tarred, bituminised or asphalted paper and paperboard, together achieving 93% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +11.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.
In value terms, Poland ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported tarred, bituminised or asphalted paper and paperboard in Eastern Europe, comprising 51% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Estonia ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Poland totaled +19.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Estonia (-4.1% per year) and the Czech Republic (-6.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -8.8% against the previous year. Import price indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, asphalted paper import price increased by +24.4% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 44% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
