Toothpaste Market Size in Eastern Europe

In 2021, the East European toothpaste market increased by 8.2% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, toothpaste production expanded slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Eastern Europe

In 2021, overseas shipments of toothpaste, denture cleaners and other dentifrices decreased by -2% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. Total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -3.8% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 42%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, toothpaste exports amounted to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +43.8% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 33%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Poland (X tons) was the key exporter of toothpaste, denture cleaners and other dentifrices, generating 49% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Slovakia (X tons) and Russia (X tons), together making up a 39% share of total exports. The following exporters - Bulgaria (X tons), Romania (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) - together made up 11% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Slovakia (with a CAGR of +24.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Poland ($X), Slovakia ($X) and Russia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 83% share of total exports. Hungary, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria and Romania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 14%.

Among the main exporting countries, Bulgaria, with a CAGR of +19.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 2.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 14% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+6.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Eastern Europe

Toothpaste imports expanded slightly to X tons in 2021, increasing by 3.5% on the previous year's figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 9.7% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, toothpaste imports surged to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Russia was the main importer of toothpaste, denture cleaners and other dentifrices in Eastern Europe, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was near 41% of total imports in 2021. Poland (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Romania (X tons), Ukraine (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons). All these countries together took near 49% share of total imports. Belarus (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

Russia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of toothpaste, denture cleaners and other dentifrices. At the same time, Romania (+8.4%), Belarus (+3.3%), Poland (+2.1%), Hungary (+1.8%) and the Czech Republic (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +8.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Ukraine (-2.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Romania (+3.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Russia and Ukraine saw its share reduced by -2.6% and -3.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest toothpaste importing markets in Eastern Europe were Russia ($X), Poland ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X), with a combined 58% share of total imports. Hungary, Ukraine, Romania and Belarus lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 28%.

Romania, with a CAGR of +9.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 13% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
