The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 32% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

In value terms, twine and cordage exports rose remarkably to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +85.7% against 2012 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 15% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

The biggest shipments were from Hungary (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Poland (X tons), together finishing at 71% of total export. Russia (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Lithuania (X tons). All these countries together held near 14% share of total exports. The following exporters - Slovakia (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) - each resulted at an 8.3% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Belarus (with a CAGR of +26.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest twine and cordage supplying countries in Eastern Europe were the Czech Republic ($X), Poland ($X) and Hungary ($X), together comprising 63% of total exports. These countries were followed by Lithuania, Slovakia, Russia and Belarus, which together accounted for a further 29%.

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 19% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Slovakia (+9.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Eastern Europe

For the sixth year in a row, Eastern Europe recorded growth in purchases abroad of twine, cordage, rope and cables, which increased by 6.9% to X tons in 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, twine and cordage imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +79.1% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Russia was the key importer of twine, cordage, rope and cables in Eastern Europe, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was near 33% of total imports in 2021. Romania (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Poland (X tons), Ukraine (X tons), Hungary (X tons), Lithuania (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons). All these countries together held near 51% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to twine and cordage imports into Russia stood at +6.8%. At the same time, Hungary (+18.1%), Lithuania (+7.2%), Romania (+4.6%) and Poland (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Hungary emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +18.1% from 2012-2021. The Czech Republic and Ukraine experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Russia (+6.4 p.p.) and Hungary (+5.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the Czech Republic and Ukraine saw its share reduced by -3.4% and -4.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest twine and cordage importing markets in Eastern Europe were Russia ($X), Poland ($X) and Romania ($X), with a combined 54% share of total imports. The Czech Republic, Lithuania, Hungary and Ukraine lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 30%.

Among the main importing countries, Hungary, with a CAGR of +15.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
