Uncooked Pasta Market Size in Eastern Europe

In 2021, the East European uncooked pasta market decreased by -7.9% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, consumption saw a slight curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 5.9%. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, uncooked pasta production fell to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production continues to indicate a slight curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 6.1% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of uncooked pasta decreased by -5.5% to X tons for the first time since 2014, thus ending a six-year rising trend. Total exports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +66.7% against 2014 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, uncooked pasta exports rose significantly to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +75.0% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

The shipments of the six major exporters of uncooked pasta, namely the Czech Republic, Russia, Latvia, Poland, Hungary and Lithuania, represented more than two-thirds of total export. Romania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Latvia (with a CAGR of +21.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest uncooked pasta supplying countries in Eastern Europe were the Czech Republic ($X), Poland ($X) and Russia ($X), with a combined 55% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Latvia, Hungary, Lithuania and Romania, which together accounted for a further 35%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Latvia, with a CAGR of +20.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 12% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Romania ($X per ton), while Latvia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+1.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of uncooked pasta decreased by -6.8% to X tons for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, uncooked pasta imports expanded markedly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 21%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of uncooked pasta imports in 2021 were Poland (X tons), Ukraine (X tons), Russia (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Romania (X tons), together reaching 72% of total import. Belarus (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 5.9% share, followed by Slovakia (5.7%) and Hungary (5%).

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Romania (with a CAGR of +10.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest uncooked pasta importing markets in Eastern Europe were Russia ($X), Poland ($X) and Ukraine ($X), with a combined 50% share of total imports. These countries were followed by the Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia, Hungary and Belarus, which together accounted for a further 38%.

Among the main importing countries, Romania, with a CAGR of +13.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 14% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Romania ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
