Walnut Market Size in Eastern Europe

The East European walnut market rose modestly to $X in 2021, with an increase of 3.7% against the previous year. Overall, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Walnut Production in Eastern Europe

In value terms, walnut production declined modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a noticeable decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 16%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

The country with the largest volume of walnut production was Ukraine (X tons), accounting for 55% of total volume. Moreover, walnut production in Ukraine exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Romania (X tons), twofold. Belarus (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 7.4% share.

In Ukraine, walnut production expanded at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Romania (+5.4% per year) and Belarus (-0.2% per year).

In 2021, the average yield of walnuts in Eastern Europe expanded remarkably to X tons per ha, increasing by 5.5% compared with 2020 figures. In general, the yield, however, saw a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the yield increased by 10% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The walnut harvested area shrank modestly to X ha in 2021, approximately reflecting the year before. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 15%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to walnut production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2020, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

Exports in Eastern Europe

In 2021, overseas shipments of walnuts decreased by -7.9% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, exports saw a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 135% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, walnut exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 98%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Ukraine was the major exporter of walnuts in Eastern Europe, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was near 57% of total exports in 2021. Belarus (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 19% share, followed by Russia (7.2%) and Poland (4.8%). Moldova (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Ukraine decreased at an average annual rate of -9.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Belarus (+202.4%), Russia (+66.5%), Poland (+12.6%) and Slovakia (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +202.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Hungary (-8.9%) and Moldova (-9.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Belarus, Russia and Poland increased by +19, +7.2 and +3.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Ukraine ($X) remains the largest walnut supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 56% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Hungary, with an 8.2% share.

In Ukraine, walnut exports plunged by an average annual rate of -10.4% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belarus (+177.1% per year) and Hungary (-12.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a noticeable setback. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2021, imports of walnuts in Eastern Europe soared to X tons, with an increase of 48% compared with 2020. In general, imports posted strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 69% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, walnut imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 67%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of walnut imports in 2021 were Russia (X tons), Romania (X tons), Belarus (X tons) and Moldova (X tons), together accounting for 92% of total import. The following importers - Slovakia (X tons) and Bulgaria (X tons) - together made up 4.7% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Belarus (with a CAGR of +43.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Russia ($X), Romania ($X) and Moldova ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 76% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Belarus, Slovakia and Bulgaria, which together accounted for a further 19%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Belarus, with a CAGR of +39.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -17.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a mild reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 22%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+4.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
