In 2022, the East European market for welded and cold-formed sections of steel increased by 34% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a deep reduction. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, welded and cold-formed steel sections production skyrocketed to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 44% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Eastern Europe
In 2022, approx. X tons of welded and cold-formed sections of steel were exported in Eastern Europe; which is down by -24.1% on the previous year. In general, exports, however, showed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 64% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, welded and cold-formed steel sections exports contracted modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 25%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year.
Exports by Country
Poland represented the key exporter of welded and cold-formed sections of steel in Eastern Europe, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was approx. 43% of total exports in 2022. Romania (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 18% share, followed by Bulgaria (15%) and Russia (12%). The following exporters - the Czech Republic (X tons), Estonia (X tons) and Lithuania (X tons) - together made up 8.9% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to welded and cold-formed steel sections exports from Poland stood at +13.2%. At the same time, Bulgaria (+34.5%), Lithuania (+18.0%), Estonia (+14.4%), Romania (+10.4%), Russia (+5.6%) and the Czech Republic (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bulgaria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +34.5% from 2012-2022. While the share of Poland (+13 p.p.), Bulgaria (+13 p.p.) and Romania (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of the Czech Republic (-3.1 p.p.) and Russia (-4.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest welded and cold-formed steel sections supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 55% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Romania ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Bulgaria, with a 5.8% share.
In Poland, welded and cold-formed steel sections exports increased at an average annual rate of +12.4% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Romania (+10.6% per year) and Bulgaria (+33.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 27% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a mild slump. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Lithuania ($X per ton), while Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Estonia (+4.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Welded And Cold-Formed Sections Of Steel
Imports in Eastern Europe
For the third year in a row, Eastern Europe recorded growth in supplies from abroad of welded and cold-formed sections of steel, which increased by 2.6% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a noticeable curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 9.5%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, welded and cold-formed steel sections imports rose remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 20%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
The Czech Republic (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons), Romania (X tons) and Poland (X tons) represented roughly 82% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Russia (X tons), generating a 5.6% share of total imports. The following importers - Lithuania (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons) - each resulted at a 4.7% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Bulgaria (with a CAGR of +20.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
In value terms, the largest welded and cold-formed steel sections importing markets in Eastern Europe were the Czech Republic ($X), Bulgaria ($X) and Poland ($X), together comprising 55% of total imports.
In terms of the main importing countries, Bulgaria, with a CAGR of +18.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 7.3% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+7.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
