Exports in Eastern Europe
In 2022, exports of wood chips and particles in Eastern Europe expanded rapidly to X cubic meters, picking up by 9.6% compared with 2021 figures. In general, exports posted a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X cubic meters in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, wood chips and particles exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Russia (X cubic meters), Latvia (X cubic meters) and Belarus (X cubic meters) represented roughly 77% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Estonia (X cubic meters) and Lithuania (X cubic meters), together comprising a 16% share of total exports. The following exporters - the Czech Republic (X cubic meters) and Slovakia (X cubic meters) - each recorded a 4.1% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Lithuania (with a CAGR of +20.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest wood chips and particles supplying countries in Eastern Europe were Latvia ($X), Russia ($X) and Belarus ($X), with a combined 74% share of total exports. Estonia, Lithuania, the Czech Republic and Slovakia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Lithuania, with a CAGR of +14.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per cubic meter, surging by 13% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 17%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per cubic meter. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per cubic meter), while Belarus ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Latvia (+4.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Imports of Wood Chips And Particles
Imports in Eastern Europe
In 2022, overseas purchases of wood chips and particles decreased by -17.7% to X cubic meters, falling for the third year in a row after six years of growth. Overall, imports, however, showed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 56%. The volume of import peaked at X cubic meters in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, wood chips and particles imports expanded significantly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 70% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Poland was the major importer of wood chips and particles in Eastern Europe, with the volume of imports reaching X cubic meters, which was approx. 65% of total imports in 2022. Lithuania (X cubic meters) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Latvia (X cubic meters) and Romania (X cubic meters). All these countries together held approx. 26% share of total imports. The following importers - the Czech Republic (X cubic meters) and Slovakia (X cubic meters) - together made up 6.8% of total imports.
Imports into Poland increased at an average annual rate of +7.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Romania (+80.3%), Latvia (+16.4%), Slovakia (+14.0%) and Lithuania (+10.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +80.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the Czech Republic (-6.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Poland, Lithuania, Romania and Latvia increased by +4.9, +4.8, +4.6 and +3.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Poland ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported wood chips and particles in Eastern Europe, comprising 45% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Lithuania ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with a 7.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Poland amounted to +4.9%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Lithuania (+15.2% per year) and the Czech Republic (-2.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per cubic meter, growing by 33% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per cubic meter in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
