In 2022, the East European wood pellets market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, consumption enjoyed a strong expansion. As a result, consumption reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

From 2020 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Eastern Europe

After ten years of growth, shipments abroad of wood pellets decreased by -8.6% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, wood pellets exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

The biggest shipments were from Russia (X tons), Latvia (X tons) and Estonia (X tons), together reaching 61% of total export. Belarus (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Ukraine (X tons), Lithuania (X tons), Poland (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 30% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Belarus (with a CAGR of +21.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Latvia ($X), Estonia ($X) and Russia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 52% share of total exports. Lithuania, Poland, the Czech Republic, Ukraine and Belarus lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 35%.

Among the main exporting countries, Ukraine, with a CAGR of +23.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, rising by 34% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+6.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Eastern Europe

After eight years of growth, overseas purchases of wood pellets decreased by -2.8% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports, however, posted a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 39%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, wood pellets imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 56%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Poland (X tons) and Latvia (X tons) represented the main importers of wood pellets in Eastern Europe, together amounting to approx. 58% of total imports. Lithuania (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Bulgaria (X tons) and Romania (X tons). All these countries together held near 31% share of total imports. The Czech Republic (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Romania (with a CAGR of +55.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 48% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.0%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
