For the third consecutive year, Eastern Europe recorded decline in supplies from abroad of wooden particle board, which decreased by -17.2% to X cubic meters in 2021. Overall, imports showed a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 180% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X cubic meters in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wooden particle board imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a abrupt slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 81%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Latvia represented the largest importer of wooden particle board in Eastern Europe, with the volume of imports recording X cubic meters, which was near 53% of total imports in 2021. Hungary (X cubic meters) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by Slovakia (10%), Poland (9%) and the Czech Republic (9%). The following importers - Lithuania (X cubic meters) and Ukraine (X cubic meters) - each finished at a 4% share of total imports.

Latvia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the wooden particle board imports, with a CAGR of +43.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Slovakia (+9.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, the Czech Republic (-5.3%), Ukraine (-6.8%), Lithuania (-7.0%), Poland (-21.7%) and Hungary (-29.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Latvia (+53 p.p.), Slovakia (+9 p.p.) and the Czech Republic (+5.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Poland (-11.9 p.p.) and Hungary (-51.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Latvia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported wooden particle board in Eastern Europe, comprising 51% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Poland, with an 11% share.

In Latvia, wooden particle board imports increased at an average annual rate of +35.1% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Czech Republic (-2.9% per year) and Poland (-15.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per cubic meter, growing by 42% against the previous year. Import price indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, wooden particle board import price increased by +166.3% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 92% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
