The East European worked flat glass market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after three years of decline. In general, consumption, however, showed a pronounced curtailment. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, worked flat glass production amounted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 10%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Eastern Europe

In 2021, the amount of worked flat glass exported in Eastern Europe expanded significantly to X tons, with an increase of 5.3% against 2020. Overall, exports, however, saw a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 7.6% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, worked flat glass exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a noticeable decrease. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The Czech Republic represented the major exporting country with an export of around X tons, which recorded 63% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Poland (X tons), Ukraine (X tons) and Russia (X tons), together mixing up a 24% share of total exports. The following exporters - Hungary (X tons), Belarus (X tons) and Romania (X tons) - together made up 10% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to worked flat glass exports from the Czech Republic stood at -4.4%. At the same time, Ukraine (+40.3%), Russia (+10.0%), Belarus (+9.5%) and Poland (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ukraine emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +40.3% from 2012-2021. Romania and Hungary experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Ukraine, Russia, Poland and Belarus increased by +6, +3.8, +2.8 and +2.1 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) remains the largest worked flat glass supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 54% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Poland ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Hungary, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in the Czech Republic amounted to -5.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Poland (+2.8% per year) and Hungary (+6.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 19% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+12.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2021, overseas purchases of worked flat glass decreased by -0.7% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, imports continue to indicate a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 7.8%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, worked flat glass imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Poland represented the key importer of worked flat glass in Eastern Europe, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was near 37% of total imports in 2021. The Czech Republic (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Hungary (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons), Slovakia (X tons), Estonia (X tons), Romania (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Belarus (X tons). All these countries together held near 57% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to worked flat glass imports into Poland stood at -3.6%. At the same time, Estonia (+13.5%), Slovakia (+4.7%) and Hungary (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Estonia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +13.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Romania (-1.5%), Belarus (-2.9%), Bulgaria (-4.8%), Russia (-7.7%) and the Czech Republic (-7.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Estonia (+4.6 p.p.), Hungary (+3.5 p.p.) and Slovakia (+3.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Poland (-2 p.p.), Russia (-3.1 p.p.) and the Czech Republic (-6.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Poland ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported worked flat glass in Eastern Europe, comprising 41% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Hungary, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Poland totaled +3.8%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Czech Republic (-4.7% per year) and Hungary (+0.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.3%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
