In 2022, the East European flax fabric market decreased by -5.9% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after six years of growth. Over the period under review, consumption saw significant growth. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, Slovakia (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) were the key exporters of woven fabrics of flax in Eastern Europe, together committing 52% of total exports. Lithuania (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Poland (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Estonia (X tons) and Russia (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 39% share of total exports.

From 2020 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Slovakia (with a CAGR of +6,521.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Belarus ($X) remains the largest flax fabric supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 46% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Lithuania ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Poland, with an 8.8% share.

In Belarus, flax fabric exports expanded at an average annual rate of +31.2% over the period from 2020-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Lithuania (-4.2% per year) and Poland (+41.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, waning by -32.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price faced a significant contraction. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while Slovakia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2020 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (-2.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Russia was the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 44% of total imports. Lithuania (X tons) took a 19% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by the Czech Republic (12%), Romania (6.3%) and Bulgaria (4.5%). The following importers - Poland (X tons) and Ukraine (X tons) - each reached a 7.1% share of total imports.

From 2020 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to flax fabric imports into Russia stood at +1.6%. At the same time, the Czech Republic (+213.9%), Lithuania (+30.2%), Poland (+21.4%), Ukraine (+7.7%) and Bulgaria (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Czech Republic emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +213.9% from 2020-2022. By contrast, Romania (-7.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the Czech Republic (+10 p.p.) and Lithuania (+5.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2020-2022, the share of Romania (-3 p.p.) and Russia (-9.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest flax fabric importing markets in Eastern Europe were Lithuania ($X), Romania ($X) and Bulgaria ($X), with a combined 56% share of total imports. Poland, Russia, Ukraine and the Czech Republic lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 30%.

In terms of the main importing countries, the Czech Republic, with a CAGR of +50.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -15.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the import price increased by 10%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.
