In 2021, the East European woolen fabric market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a abrupt shrinkage. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Eastern Europe
In 2021, shipments abroad of woven woolen fabrics increased by 15% to X square meters for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X square meters. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, woolen fabric exports shrank modestly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a abrupt descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
The shipments of the seven major exporters of woven woolen fabrics, namely Romania, Russia, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Belarus, Lithuania and Slovakia, represented more than two-thirds of total export. Romania (X square meters) held a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Russia (7.2%), Bulgaria (11%), Poland (2.6%), Belarus (5.1%), Lithuania (22%) and Slovakia (7.8%). Hungary (X square meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Romania (with a CAGR of +9.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X), Romania ($X) and Lithuania ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 73% share of total exports.
Romania, with a CAGR of +3.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per square meter in 2021, declining by -16.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a noticeable descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 24%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per square meter. From 2019 to 2021, the the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per square meter), while Slovakia ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (-0.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Eastern Europe
Woolen fabric imports totaled X square meters in 2021, growing by 13% against 2020 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a mild reduction. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X square meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, woolen fabric imports dropped modestly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 8.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Romania was the key importer of woven woolen fabrics in Eastern Europe, with the volume of imports amounting to X square meters, which was near 28% of total imports in 2021. Russia (X square meters) took an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Bulgaria (14%), Poland (15%), Belarus (3.6%), Lithuania (9.9%), Ukraine (6.7%) and Hungary (3.6%). The following importers - Belarus (X square meters) and the Czech Republic (X square meters) - each finished at an 8% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Lithuania (with a CAGR of +6.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Romania ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported woven woolen fabrics in Eastern Europe, comprising 34% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Poland ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Bulgaria, with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Romania amounted to -6.0%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (-4.0% per year) and Bulgaria (-10.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per square meter, with a decrease of -15% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 7.3% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per square meter in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Ukraine ($X per square meter), while Russia ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ukraine (+1.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
