Yams Market Size in Eastern Europe

The East European yams market contracted to $X in 2022, dropping by -13.1% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, showed a buoyant expansion. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Yams Production in Eastern Europe

In value terms, yams production soared to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production enjoyed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 2,338,700% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

The Czech Republic (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of yams production, accounting for 74% of total volume. Moreover, yams production in the Czech Republic exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Hungary (X tons), threefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in the Czech Republic stood at +23.6%.

Exports in Eastern Europe

For the fourth year in a row, Eastern Europe recorded growth in shipments abroad of yams, which increased by 112% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports showed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 26,400% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, yams exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports posted significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 12,291%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Bulgaria prevails in exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 91% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Hungary (X tons), achieving a 9.1% share of total exports.

Bulgaria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of yams. Hungary (-29.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2015 to 2022, the share of Bulgaria and Hungary increased by +90 and +8.1 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

From 2015 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Bulgaria was relatively modest.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, growing by 56% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a prominent increase. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while Bulgaria stood at $X per ton.

From 2015 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (-0.0%).

Yams Imports

Imports in Eastern Europe

After two years of growth, purchases abroad of yams decreased by -4% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 343%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

In value terms, yams imports reduced modestly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 486%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined modestly in the following year.

Imports by Country

Russia was the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which resulted at 73% of total imports. Bulgaria (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Romania (X tons). All these countries together held near 23% share of total imports. Ukraine (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Russia increased at an average annual rate of +17.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Ukraine (+36.0%) and Romania (+15.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ukraine emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +36.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Bulgaria (-10.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Bulgaria (+18 p.p.) and Ukraine (+2.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Romania (-2.1 p.p.) and Russia (-13.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported yams in Eastern Europe, comprising 67% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Bulgaria ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Romania, with a 12% share.

In Russia, yams imports increased at an average annual rate of +24.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Bulgaria (+35.6% per year) and Romania (+19.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, enjoyed a moderate expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 107%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Romania ($X per ton), while Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bulgaria (+51.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
