In 2021, the East European man-made filament yarn market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, consumption, however, saw a pronounced contraction. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of man-made filament yarn decreased by -22% to X tons, falling for the fourth year in a row after four years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a mild increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 66% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, man-made filament yarn exports declined to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -28.4% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 59%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

The Czech Republic was the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded 64% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Hungary (X tons), Latvia (X tons) and Belarus (X tons), together committing a 22% share of total exports. Slovakia (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Moldova (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from the Czech Republic increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Moldova (+80.8%), Latvia (+12.5%) and Slovakia (+8.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Moldova emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +80.8% from 2012-2021. Hungary experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Poland (-6.3%) and Belarus (-15.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the Czech Republic (+17 p.p.), Latvia (+3.8 p.p.), Moldova (+2.5 p.p.) and Slovakia (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Poland (-3.3 p.p.) and Belarus (-19.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) remains the largest man-made filament yarn supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Hungary ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Latvia, with a 5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in the Czech Republic amounted to +15.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Hungary (-5.9% per year) and Latvia (+8.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, rising by 20% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Moldova ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+10.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Eastern Europe

Man-made filament yarn imports rose sharply to X tons in 2021, growing by 6.5% compared with 2020. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, man-made filament yarn imports rose notably to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. In 2021, Poland (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Romania (X tons) was the major importer of man-made filament yarn in Eastern Europe, creating 72% of total import. It was distantly followed by the Czech Republic (X tons), creating an 11% share of total imports. The following importers - Belarus (X tons), Estonia (X tons) and Ukraine (X tons) - together made up 11% of total imports.

Poland, with a CAGR of +11.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, surging by 4.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 20% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Estonia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
