The total production indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -19.6% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 43%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in ECOWAS

In 2021, shipments abroad of adhesive dressings or similar articles increased by 57% to X tons, rising for the fifth year in a row after three years of decline. In general, exports showed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 88%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, adhesive dressings exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 91%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Benin (X tons) and Guinea (X tons) dominates exports structure, together constituting 94% of total exports. The following exporters - Senegal (X kg) and Togo (X kg) - each reached a 4% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Senegal (with a CAGR of +18.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Guinea ($X) remains the largest adhesive dressings supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Benin ($X), with a 9.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Senegal, with an 8.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Guinea was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Benin (-16.0% per year) and Senegal (+7.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -18.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a abrupt descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 28%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (+1.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2021, adhesive dressings imports in ECOWAS dropped significantly to X tons, falling by -19.7% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, showed a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 331% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, adhesive dressings imports reached $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 103%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Nigeria was the main importer of adhesive dressings or similar articles in ECOWAS, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 47% of total imports in 2021. Ghana (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Senegal (X tons), Mali (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 45% share of total imports. Benin (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

Imports into Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +13.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Burkina Faso (+23.0%), Mali (+20.4%), Senegal (+20.1%), Cote d'Ivoire (+14.9%) and Benin (+3.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Burkina Faso emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +23.0% from 2012-2021. Ghana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Nigeria (+13 p.p.), Mali (+4.9 p.p.), Senegal (+4.9 p.p.), Burkina Faso (+3 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Benin and Ghana saw its share reduced by -1.7% and -23.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, the largest adhesive dressings importing markets in ECOWAS were Nigeria ($X), Ghana ($X) and Senegal ($X), together accounting for 63% of total imports. These countries were followed by Cote d'Ivoire, Mali, Burkina Faso and Benin, which together accounted for a further 29%.

Burkina Faso, with a CAGR of +28.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 25% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 39%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Benin ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
