In 2022, overseas purchases of adipic acid, its salts and esters increased by 8.4% to X tons, rising for the fourth year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 67%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, adipic acid imports stood at $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a abrupt slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 105% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Nigeria dominates imports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 95% of total imports in 2022. The following importers - Cote d'Ivoire (X kg) and Ghana (X kg) - together made up 5% of total imports.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the adipic acid, its salts and esters imports, with a CAGR of -7.4% from 2012 to 2022. Cote d'Ivoire (-10.4%) and Ghana (-31.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Nigeria (+33 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Ghana (-32.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported adipic acid, its salts and esters in ECOWAS, comprising 95% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 3.9% share of total imports.

In Nigeria, adipic acid imports decreased by an average annual rate of -6.4% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Cote d'Ivoire (-6.6% per year) and Ghana (-22.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -7.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, enjoyed a moderate expansion.
