In 2021, Nigeria (X tons) was the key exporter of aluminum, constituting 71% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X tons), achieving a 29% share of total exports.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the aluminum exports, with a CAGR of +14.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Ghana (+8.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Nigeria (+9.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Ghana saw its share reduced by -9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, the largest aluminum supplying countries in ECOWAS were Ghana ($X) and Nigeria ($X).

In 2021, the amount of aluminum imported in ECOWAS surged to X tons, jumping by 31% on the year before. Overall, imports recorded prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 210%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, aluminum imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 279% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

The countries with the highest levels of aluminum imports in 2021 were Nigeria (X tons), together reaching 98% of total import.
