In value terms, alums exports shrank rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a dramatic curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 352%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Togo was the major exporter of alums in ECOWAS, with the volume of exports resulting at X kg, which was near 69% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X kg), making up a 29% share of total exports. Ghana (X kg) held a relatively small share of total exports.
Togo was also the fastest-growing in terms of the alums exports, with a CAGR of -5.1% from 2012 to 2022. Nigeria (-17.0%) and Ghana (-38.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Togo (+53 p.p.) and Nigeria (+3.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Ghana (-34.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Togo ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Ghana ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Togo, with a CAGR of -15.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -57.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 202% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+3.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in ECOWAS
For the third consecutive year, ECOWAS recorded growth in supplies from abroad of alums, which increased by 34% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 209% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, alums imports expanded modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a perceptible contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 87%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Cote d'Ivoire prevails in imports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 89% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), committing a 7% share of total imports. Senegal (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Cote d'Ivoire was also the fastest-growing in terms of the alums imports, with a CAGR of +33.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Nigeria (+4.2%) and Senegal (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Cote d'Ivoire (+64 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Senegal and Nigeria saw its share reduced by -6.4% and -16.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, the largest alums importing markets in ECOWAS were Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Senegal ($X), together comprising 88% of total imports.
Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +9.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -23.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 67% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
