Nigeria represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which finished at 54% of total exports. Niger (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Ghana (X tons). All these countries together held near 40% share of total exports. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Niger (with a CAGR of +40.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) emerged as the largest anionic surface-active agents (excl. soap) supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 64% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Niger ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 7.6% share.
In Nigeria, anionic surface-active agents (excl. soap) exports increased at an average annual rate of +11.9% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Niger (+28.7% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (-11.4% per year).

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

For the third year in a row, ECOWAS recorded growth in purchases abroad of anionic surface-active agents (excluding soap), which increased by 38% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 44%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, anionic surface-active agents (excl. soap) imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a perceptible descent. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) represented the main importer of anionic surface-active agents (excluding soap) in ECOWAS, constituting 79% of total import. It was distantly followed by Burkina Faso (X tons), creating a 13% share of total imports. The following importers - Cabo Verde (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) - each resulted at a 4.2% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Cabo Verde (with a CAGR of +50.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Ghana ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 85% of total imports. These countries were followed by Burkina Faso, Senegal and Cabo Verde, which together accounted for a further 10%.
Cabo Verde, with a CAGR of +36.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 10% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced reduction. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
