The ECOWAS market for anise, badian, fennel and coriander amounted to $X in 2022, increasing by 11% against the previous year. Production of Anise, Badian, Fennel And Coriander in ECOWAS
In value terms, anise, badian, fennel and coriander production contracted modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
Sierra Leone (X tons) remains the largest anise, badian, fennel and coriander producing country in ECOWAS, accounting for 59% of total volume. Moreover, anise, badian, fennel and coriander production in Sierra Leone exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Nigeria (X tons), twofold. Niger (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 9.5% share.
In Sierra Leone, anise, badian, fennel and coriander production expanded at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Nigeria (+2.0% per year) and Niger (+3.1% per year).
Exports of Anise, Badian, Fennel And Coriander
Exports in ECOWAS
After two years of growth, overseas shipments of anise, badian, fennel and coriander decreased by -24.1% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 144%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then contracted notably in the following year.
In value terms, anise, badian, fennel and coriander exports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 117%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.
Exports by Country
Sierra Leone dominates exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 89% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), constituting a 7.3% share of total exports. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Sierra Leone was also the fastest-growing in terms of the anise, badian, fennel and coriander exports, with a CAGR of +28.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Nigeria (+23.6%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+19.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Sierra Leone (+26 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Sierra Leone ($X) remains the largest anise, badian, fennel and coriander supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Nigeria ($X), with a 7.4% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Sierra Leone totaled +38.3%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Nigeria (+18.4% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+14.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Export price indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, anise, badian, fennel and coriander export price increased by +140.9% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 53%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sierra Leone (+8.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Imports of Anise, Badian, Fennel And Coriander
Imports in ECOWAS
For the fourth year in a row, ECOWAS recorded growth in supplies from abroad of anise, badian, fennel and coriander, which increased by 14% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 111% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, anise, badian, fennel and coriander imports reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 94% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Nigeria (X tons) was the main importer of anise, badian, fennel and coriander, committing 68% of total imports. Ghana (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Senegal (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 24% share of total imports. Togo (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.
Imports into Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +24.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Togo (+87.5%), Ghana (+28.3%) and Senegal (+7.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Togo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +87.5% from 2012-2022. While the share of Nigeria (+22 p.p.), Ghana (+10 p.p.) and Togo (+3.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Senegal (-8.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, the largest anise, badian, fennel and coriander importing markets in ECOWAS were Nigeria ($X), Ghana ($X) and Senegal ($X), together accounting for 89% of total imports. Togo lagged somewhat behind, comprising a further 1.2%.
Togo, with a CAGR of +45.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -18.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a slight decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 56% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+3.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
