In 2021, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in the ECOWAS antisera market, when its value decreased by -5.9% to $X. In general, consumption, however, saw a remarkable increase. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, antisera production fell to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 37%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

Exports in ECOWAS

In 2021, shipments abroad of antisera and other blood fractions increased by 20% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, exports recorded a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 1,772%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, antisera exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 832%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Burkina Faso (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) represented the largest exporters of antisera and other blood fractions in ECOWAS, together reaching approx. 57% of total exports. Senegal (X kg) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 15% share, followed by Liberia (14%), Nigeria (6.5%) and Togo (5.5%).

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Burkina Faso (with a CAGR of +112.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Senegal ($X) emerged as the largest antisera supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Liberia ($X), with a 6.8% share of total exports. It was followed by Togo, with a 3.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Senegal amounted to +129.2%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Liberia (+78.7% per year) and Togo (-12.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 441% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 482%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+20.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Antisera Imports

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2021, approx. X tons of antisera and other blood fractions were imported in ECOWAS; falling by -46.5% compared with 2020 figures. In general, imports, however, recorded a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 202%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then fell notably in the following year.

In value terms, antisera imports declined to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 118%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then fell in the following year.

Imports by Country

Ghana (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons) represented roughly 73% of total imports in 2021. Guinea (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 6.2% share, followed by Sierra Leone (4.6%). The following importers - Liberia (X tons) and Gambia (X tons) - each finished at a 7.5% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Gambia (with a CAGR of +68.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported antisera and other blood fractions in ECOWAS, comprising 37% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Burkina Faso, with a 7.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Cote d'Ivoire totaled +22.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ghana (+6.3% per year) and Burkina Faso (+40.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 69% against the previous year. Import price indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
