Apple Juice Market Size in ECOWAS

After four years of growth, the ECOWAS apple juice market decreased by -0.9% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw perceptible growth. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

Apple Juice Production in ECOWAS

In value terms, apple juice production shrank to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded measured growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 101% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

Apple Juice Exports

Exports in ECOWAS

In 2021, approx. X tons of apple juice (single strength) were exported in ECOWAS; with an increase of 8.8% compared with 2020 figures. In general, exports, however, recorded a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 762%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, apple juice exports fell slightly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 533%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Nigeria (X tons) was the main exporter of apple juice (single strength), making up 77% of total exports. Ghana (X tons) took a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Burkina Faso (8.8%).

Exports from Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Ghana (+26.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +26.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Burkina Faso (-24.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Nigeria (+53 p.p.), Ghana (+12 p.p.) and Burkina Faso (+8.8 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) remains the largest apple juice supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Burkina Faso ($X), with a 13% share of total exports.

In Nigeria, apple juice exports decreased by an average annual rate of -6.1% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Burkina Faso (-26.4% per year) and Ghana (+9.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -10.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 18%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Burkina Faso ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Burkina Faso (-2.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Apple Juice Imports

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2021, apple juice imports in ECOWAS surged to X tons, rising by 26% against the year before. In general, imports showed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 91% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, apple juice imports shrank to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 120%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Ghana (X tons) was the main importer of apple juice (single strength), making up 46% of total imports. Nigeria (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 18% share, followed by Cabo Verde (12%) and Mali (7.7%). The following importers - Senegal (X tons), Guinea (X tons) and Liberia (X tons) - together made up 10% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to apple juice imports into Ghana stood at +9.1%. At the same time, Mali (+59.1%), Guinea (+28.1%), Senegal (+23.8%), Liberia (+22.8%), Cabo Verde (+17.8%) and Nigeria (+13.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mali emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +59.1% from 2012-2021. Mali (+7.4 p.p.), Cabo Verde (+3.7 p.p.), Guinea (+2.3 p.p.), Senegal (+2.1 p.p.) and Liberia (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Ghana saw its share reduced by -17.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Ghana ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Cabo Verde ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 79% of total imports. Mali, Senegal, Guinea and Liberia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 15%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Mali, with a CAGR of +61.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -28.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 15%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Liberia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mali (+1.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
