Articles Of Zinc Market Size in ECOWAS

The ECOWAS articles of zinc market expanded significantly to $X in 2021, increasing by 7.3% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -5.5% against 2019 indices. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, articles of zinc production reached $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -6.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in ECOWAS

In 2021, overseas shipments of articles of zinc increased by 47% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after five years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 359% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, articles of zinc exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 1,160%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Senegal dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 91% of total exports in 2021. Sierra Leone (X kg), Togo (X kg) and Nigeria (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Senegal decreased at an average annual rate of -12.0% from 2012 to 2021. Nigeria (-4.6%), Togo (-7.8%) and Sierra Leone (-12.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Senegal (+2.8 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Senegal ($X) remains the largest articles of zinc supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Togo ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Sierra Leone, with a 6.9% share.

In Senegal, articles of zinc exports decreased by an average annual rate of -10.1% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Togo (+9.4% per year) and Sierra Leone (-19.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 30% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a mild expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 174% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Togo ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (+18.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Articles Of Zinc Imports

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2021, purchases abroad of articles of zinc increased by 36% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after four years of decline. In general, imports, however, saw a noticeable decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 183%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, articles of zinc imports reached $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 88%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Ghana (X tons) represented the largest importer of articles of zinc, comprising 47% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), Sierra Leone (X tons), Guinea (X tons) and Mali (X tons), together achieving a 40% share of total imports. The following importers - Senegal (X tons) and Togo (X tons) - each amounted to a 6% share of total imports.

Ghana was also the fastest-growing in terms of the articles of zinc imports, with a CAGR of +51.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Sierra Leone (+45.0%) and Guinea (+44.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Nigeria (-4.2%), Togo (-15.7%), Mali (-18.1%) and Senegal (-25.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Ghana, Sierra Leone and Guinea increased by +46, +7.9 and +7 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Ghana ($X), Sierra Leone ($X) and Nigeria ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 60% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Sierra Leone, with a CAGR of +54.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -17.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a perceptible decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the import price increased by 25%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Sierra Leone ($X per ton), while Guinea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sierra Leone (+6.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
